Carey Place is a 4-storey senior’s affordable housing development, strategically sited as part of the Mount View community master plan. The development was located adjacent to two additional senior’s focused developments and a market parcel, slightly north of the growing Uptown commercial area of Saanich. Anchoring the entire campus is a public park which Saanich is currently redeveloping for passive use and trail connection. In order to create Carey Place, the design team had to develop plans for a main access road to be shared by three of the campus developments, along with a centrally located public trail connection between Carey Road and the public park. Design focus therefore aimed to create a hierarchy of private and semi-private spaces for resident use that complemented the nearby public park trail. CEPTED and considerations of safety, visibility, and accessibility were of focus in the design process to ensure the needs of residents were being met. Key features provided to residents include a raised vegetable garden area and green house, continuous walking loops in open spaces, multiple seating nodes continuously provided throughout the grounds of the development, and multiple “overlook” nodes that look out over the various rain gardens developed to treat the site’s storm water.
