Mark van der Zalm

Mark is the founder of van der Zalm + associates (VDZ+A) in Vancouver, Fort Langley, and Kelowna British Columbia. He has over 25-years experience as a landscape architect for projects throughout British Columbia, Canada, and many in the United States. Throughout his career, Mark has developed strong relationships with a network of decision makers, community leaders, industry professionals, and allied consulting firms. Mark is a recognized global leader in the Parks and Recreation and Action Sports consulting community. Mark has presented on panels across North America advocating for greater appreciation for “Tactical Recreation”, and diversity in programming and design for inclusive use of public space.

Mark has served as a member of the City of Surrey Design Panel, he is the president-elect of Metro Vancouver Parks Foundation, and has also served as President of the BC Society of Landscape Architects – overseeing the 10-year strategic plan. Mark is LEED AP certified and is actively engaged with governmental think-tanks for the incorporation of Green infrastructure into municipal development projects. Mark has served his Alma Mater as a member of the University Advancement board at Utah State University. Mark is a registered landscape architect in all jurisdictions across Canada as well as many locations in the USA. Mark’s current project portfolio includes active consulting work around western Canada, Pacific Northwest, Southern USA, and the UK.

Mark works with not-for-profit community groups, bolstering the firm’s commitment to being “involved”. Mark is an award-winning registered landscape architect, with licenses across Canada and in the USA. He speaks frequently to communities about Park and Recreation issues and is a sought after expert in the area of Strategic planning for youth park, and action sports facility design.

Mark strives to bring out the best in our staff and supports our project deliverables through timely critique, and project review. His experiences in working both in private and public sector positions have provided a solid understanding of the varying perspectives that affect project development.
